Will you get kicked out of college for a misdemeanor?

On Behalf of | Aug 21, 2021 | Misdemeanors |

If you are accused of a misdemeanor crime while you’re in college, you may be concerned that this will put an end to your schooling. The truth is that every school is different, so whether you are likely to be kicked out of school or not will depend on the school’s rules.

For example, some schools may state that any DUI charges will lead to suspension. It may state that drug charges will lead to expulsion. What happens in your case will depend on the school’s regulations, so you should talk to the admissions office to see if there is a way for you to continue with your studies.

Financial aid may be a concern after a misdemeanor

One thing that may influence your schooling is the ability to obtain financial aid. If you receive aid from the federal government, you may lose your right to grants or direct loans through the government after a conviction for a drug offense (whether it’s a felony or misdemeanor). If the offense is of another type, then you may be able to retain access to those kinds of financial aid depending on your situation.

Private loans are another situation completely, and you may still have access to them. However, your career opportunities may be limited, or you could lose your job. Those issues could impact your ability to take out a loan in the future.

If you are facing a misdemeanor, don’t ignore it. Take the time to put together a strong defense, so you can do what you can to avoid a conviction and minimize the impact of this situation on your schooling.
